Love In An Unusual Way
Eight and a half months with child I was flown to the nearest American hospital at Incirlik AFB, in Adana. There were no American hospitals in the city of Izmir where J and I lived, we lived in a ten story apartment building, on the ninth floor; a small Gypsy village was our neighbor. I could look over the balcony and see the women washing their clothes in tubs with washboards. If the women knew I was flown to a hospital to have a baby they probably would have balked.
J was to fly to meet me closer to my due date of October 24th. He arrived on October 16th, bored with nothing to do he made ceramics in the recreation center, I chose to stay close to “stork’s nest” as it was called, apprehensive of venturing away too far, 20 years old and thousands of miles away from my mama. Later that evening we decided to go bowling. I returned to the “storks nest,” retired for the night, and woke up with a ‘twinge” around 1:30 a.m., at 2:53 a.m. October 17, 1974 on a beautiful warm night in Adana, Turkey, a child was born, my first child. My beautiful Ebony. Happy Birthday!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
